Team Triathlon Update

We Did It!
Despite the rain all day, we completed the Team Triathlon
Many of us exceeded our personal goals as well as the amount we needed to achieve to complete the Triathlon.

And as it was Frances' birthday today (and Tim's yesterday) we finished the day off with cake and drinks.

Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to all the people who have supported us in one way or another.

Hopefully some photos will appear soon!

(Oh and if you haven't sponsored us yet, there is still time!)

Team Triathlon Update

It's just coming up to 1pm so here's a very quick update on the Team Triathlon fundraising event taking place today.

The runners were the first to start this morning, some doing a quick lap round and others doing as many as five, leading to a total of 35 miles run (I think!). This was quite probably largely thanks to the moral support provided by all those who came along to cheer and clap!

The cyclists left at about 10.30 and now on lunch, and will be continuing shortly. For further updates, pictures and videos have a look at our Twitter (ParkURC_SA). We'll also be swimming tonight from 7pm...

Update: 23/04/12

There are now just 91 days until the team departs and the following fortnight promises to be a very exciting time in terms of the trip!

This coming weekend, two massive fundraising events are being held. On Saturday, the team are aiming to collectively complete an iron man triathlon: 2.4 miles swimming, 112 miles cycling and 26.2 miles running. This is going to be done throughout the day, with those running starting at 9.30am, those cycling starting slightly later then everyone heading down to the pool to support those swimming at 7pm. This promises to be a great day which though tough will hopefully be good fun as well. Following this on the Sunday, the Youth Team will also be bag packing at ASDA Lower Earley, which will hopefully be another fantastic opportunity to both raise some money and share with others the mission aspect of this trip. We would ask that you pray for all involved with this fundraising weekend; that they would be blessed with energy and good humour.

Then, next weekend, the team will all be heading down to Bournemouth (Visiting Immanuel URC, Southbourne) for an 'Orientation Weekend', using the time in fellowship to grow and develop as a team in preparation for the time spent in South Africa, both practically and spiritually.

Finally, you can now follow the team's progress on Twitter via @parkurc_sa. Follow for instant updates over the last couple of month's preparation and then while the group are away!

More information about the trip...

Below is an extract from an article which was printed in the Park URC (United Reformed Church) Magazine, to give some more background information to the trip this blog is about:

"You may remember that, back at the September 2011 Church Meeting, there was a presentation about a possible expedition from Park URC to Alathea Bible College (ABC) in South Africa, where church members Neil and Hilary Applegate are serving as missionaries.
There are eleven people on the Youth Team and eleven people on the Adult Team committed to this adventure and there has been much planning and fundraising taking place to enable the trip to take place. The group has just received provisional flight details, flying from Heathrow to Johannesburg.
During the last week of July and the first two weeks of August 2012, the team will be supporting the work of Neil and Hilary in a variety of ways. ABC was founded three years ago, in order to train church leaders to be able to tackle the many issues facing the South African church.
Alongside the Bible College, Alathea Skills Training and Higher Education College (ASTHEC) has been built, to provide skills training to local people, alongside bible training. Also connected to ABC is Grace School with 550 pupils aged 5 to 18 and this is one of the places we will be able to serve.
Other potential items on our itinerary include open air drama in the shopping precincts, supporting church plants in rural areas and hospital ministry. Running an after-school club for about a hundred young people will be one of the key projects for us.
Finally, business and practical projects will also be available for team members to support. Whilst members of the adult team will be serving according to their skill sets and areas of expertise, the youth team will be working together on a range of different projects. Whilst we are away, we will also be taking some time to experience the special attractions of South Africa, such as the famous Kruger National Park. We look forward to sharing with you further details of the project for your ongoing prayer support."
